Lola G.'s Mask

White Mask With Ribbon
Masks are what we use to hide our truest selves.

When I first started counseling LGBTQ people, I hid my identity as a trans woman. I presented as a gay man, helping other people live openly while I struggled with depression.

When a coworker came out as a trans man, I revealed my struggle with another coworker. She became my light in the darkness, someone who was on my side without judgment.

I always thought my mask was protection. But once it shattered, people saw the real me, and I felt free. I maintain boundaries with my clients, but it's easier for them to feel welcome and safe when they know my struggle as a trans-Latina.
