Margaret E.’s Theatre Curtains

Closed theatre curtains with an opening revealing empty chairs
These curtains on the wings of a local theatre are a representation of how I have helped others find a sense of belonging through performing.

Through a summer program with the YMCA, I served as a teaching artist for a group of young men of color. At the end of the summer, the group sang as a choir on stage. I was standing backstage behind the curtains and am glad the curtain was there so no one could see me crying.

There are many barriers in the arts community, including racial equity. Through our journey preparing for the performance, we developed deep relationships and showed the possibilities when we come together as a community.
