Books remind me that when we learn together, we learn from each other.
When I arrived in Florida, some people made me feel isolated for not speaking the right way or using the wrong lingo. But when I started school, I found people from all over the world - America, Asia, and Brazil, like me - who were trying to learn from each other.
The classroom was a space where we could find support and a sense of belonging.
When I meet other people who are new to the states, I emphasize that aspect of education. Knowledge builds community. My classmates became my friends, and we're still learning from each other every day.
